MAN ARRESTED OVER SUSPECTED ASSAULT
A man has been arrested on suspicion of assault, after an incident near Rickinghall earlier this week.
The 54 year-old man was detained by police in Bury St Edmunds, where he remains in the town’s investigation unit.
The injured man. aged in his 30s, was found with head injuries at the side of a road, between Rickinghall and Finningham, early on Thursday morning. He’s now in hospital in a stable condition.
Police say a woman driver, who stopped to help and took him to his friend’s house at Rickinghall, has now come forward.
TEENAGE DRIVER DIED WHILE USING MOBILE PHONE
An inquest has heard how a teenage driver from Diss crashed her car, while using a mobile phone.
17 year-old Shannon Gittings was killed when her car collided with a tree on the A140 near Tasburgh, last October. Dash-cam footage had shown her lose control and swerve off the main road, while exchanging messages on a phone with her boyfriend.
The accident happened just a month after Shannon, of Shelfanger Road, Diss, had passed her driving test.
Coroner Yvonne Blake said that the accident was a tragic waste of a life, but showed the dangers of using a mobile phone while driving.
SONIA BECOMES THE NEW TOWN MAYOR
Diss has a new Town Mayor. It’s Sonia Browne, who is only the second woman to be elected into the role, as well as the first person of colour.
She’s been Deputy Mayor since January and takes over from Trevor Wenman after two years. Simon Olander will continue in the post of council leader.
The town council has also agreed to co-opt half of its membership for this year, with only seven elected councillors in position currently. Up to seven new members will be taken on.
DRINK DRIVE CHARGE FOLLOWS CAR CRASH INTO WALL
A motorist has been arrested for drink-driving, after crashing into a wall near a bus stop at Yaxley.
No-one was hurt but the car has been written off. The brick wall and another car were also damaged in the incident last week.
